by women, for women, since 1802
We currently have twenty self-contained flats, each with its own separate kitchen and bathroom. They have all been completely refurbished (2020) with new bathrooms and fitted kitchens, and have been redecorated. The condition of the flats is reviewed annually and we have an ongoing programme of maintenance, redecoration and refurbishment. There is also a community room (with TV) where residents can get together and where we host communal events like coffee mornings; and a laundry room. Our residents lead independent lives, but our warden and clerk are always on hand to offer support and advice when needed.
There is a well-maintained communal garden to the rear of the almshouses for the use of all residents. It was redesigned in 2019 and offers a pleasant, secluded space in the heart of our bustling neighbourhood for quiet relaxation - and of course the odd party or two!
The Friendly Almshouses are in Stockwell Park Road, just off the Brixton Road and in walking distance from shops, mainline and underground stations and many bus routes. Find out how to find us on the directions page.
There are 2 support wardens who are on site during the week to provide pastoral and practical support (we do not provide nursing or personal care). Each flat is equipped with an emergency 24-hour call system, which is answered by the warden on duty, and monitored remotely outside of office hours. This helps our residents to live independently for as long as possible. There are various activities organised for those residents who wish to join in including yoga, art groups, coffee mornings, parties, barbecues and outings.
Working directly with the Committee/Trustees, the Operations Manager is responsible for all aspects of the management and administration of the Charity. Residents can approach the manager or the support wardens for advice and help with practical matters such as maintenance of the flats or financial concerns.
