We've provided safe, secure and affordable accommodation to hundreds of women for nearly two hundred years. Some of our current residents explain what it means to them to live in The Friendly Almshouses.
“I moved into the Friendly Almshouses in 2003 and it was the best move that I have ever made. I now feel safe and secure and no longer worry and stress. I live with ladies that I get on with, and it feels like one big extended family. The Committee members and wardens are always there to give you their support and a helping hand when needed. I am so thankful and truly grateful that these homes exist for women like myself.”
“Nearly two years ago, I moved into the Friendly Almshouses. It was such a relief to finally have a roof over my head and a place to call home. The location, with its pretty communal garden for the use of all the Almshouse residents, is surprisingly quiet considering how close it is to Brixton town with its bustling shops, and transport links. Twice-weekly coffee mornings, and other events such as garden tea parties, made it easier to meet the other residents, my new neighbours, who were quick to offer advice and help me find my way around. It was almost like having a new extended family! I feel very lucky and grateful to live here, and hope to do so for a long time to come."
“I was living in a homeless hostel in Camden and was given the details of The Friendly Almshouses. When I came to have a look I fell in love with the cottages. To have my own space to call home, well it was unbelievable. I will always be eternally grateful for everything the trustees and staff did for me, making me feel at home, helping me with my finances until I was on my feet. Everyone is so nice, there’s always help on hand I feel part of a special community. ”
