We currently have seventeen self-contained flats, each with its own separate kitchen and bathroom. They are offered with electric cooker and fridge/freezer as standard, but are otherwise unfurnished, so residents need to bring their own furniture. The condition of the flats is reviewed annually and we have an ongoing programme of maintenance, redecoration and refurbishment. There is also a community room complete with TV and PC with internet access and a laundry room. Our residents lead independent lives, but our wardens and clerk are always on hand to offer support and advice when needed.
There is a well-maintained communal garden to the rear of the almshouses for the use of all residents. It offers a pleasant, secluded space in the heart of our bustling neighbourhood for quiet relaxation - and of course the odd party or two!
The Friendly Almshouses are in Stockwell Park Road, just off the Brixton Road and in walking distance from shops, mainline and underground stations and many bus routes. Find out how to find us on the directions page.
There are two wardens, one of whom lives on site, who provide pastoral and practical support (but not nursing or personal care). Each flat is equipped with an emergency 24-hour call system, which is answered by our wardens when they are on duty, and monitored remotely when they are not. This helps our residents to live independently for as long as possible. The wardens organise various activities for those residents who wish to join in. These include coffee mornings, parties, barbecues and outings.
Working directly with the Committee/Trustees, the Clerk is responsible for all aspects of the management and administration of the Charity. Residents can approach the Clerk for advice and help with practical matters such as maintenance of the flats or financial concerns.
