About Us

The Friendly Almshouses was originally established in 1802 as the Female Friendly Society, and renamed in 1938. It is registered with the Charity Commission (No: 209895/1166703) and is a member of the National Almshouse Association, whose website you can visit via our "Links" page. You can find out more about our history by clicking on the links to the left.

The charity is managed by a Committee of Trustees, all of whom are women, chaired by Mrs Hilary Parsons. Since June 2015 the charity has also been a Company limited by Guarantee (No: 9642400). We are always pleased to hear from women interested in joining the Committee, which meets on site once a month. Members of the Committee also meet regularly with the residents at a variety of social events and formal six-monthly meetings.

Our income comes from contributions from residents, interest on endowments, subscriptions, and donations. We are always grateful for support and any contribution towards our work is very welcome. The value to the charity of donations from taxpayers is increased by 25% if a Gift Aid declaration (the forms can be found on the HMRC website) is provided.
